Differences in Face Recognition for Personally Familiar Faces and Unfamiliar Faces

Purpose of study: We are interested in investigating the differences in the ability to recognize personally familiar faces compared to faces of “strangers” and learned faces. Further, we are interested in using fMRI to see if there are any differences in neural activity in this task for older adults with indications of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to healthy aging older adults.

  • We will need you to come to the lab a total of 3 times for assessment, task training, and MR scanning sessions. We will need you to provide photos of 6 people who you consider personally familiar via a digital camera that we will loan you. We will ask that you come in for the final two sessions within 24 hours of each other for the purpose of the memory task at hand.

On your first visit, we will ask you to take part in a cognitive assessment and loan you a digital camera that you will use to capture photos of 6 close family members or friends. Then, you will return to our lab for two back-to-back scheduled visits. These visits must be within 24 hours of each other. In the first of the two visits you will perform a few computer based tasks, and on the second visit you will come to our MR facility for an fMRI scan in which you will be performing similar tasks while having the brain scan.

  • Participant must:

    Be 60+ years old

Have no medical implants/ foreign metallic bodies. If, you do have implants, make sure it is MR compatible/safe metals

Meet MRI screening (which is completed during phone call)

    Be right handed

    Have no claustrophobia

Be able to lay flat for more than 1 hour without interruptions

    Have no permanent orthodontic retainer

    Have normal to corrected vision

  • You will receive $10/hr compensation for time spent in our lab and $15/hr for time spent in our MR facility.

Also, we will ask if you would like to have your brain scan sent to our neurology team for an examination for incidental findings. You will receive a report from the neurologist with any follow up suggestions that apply to your scan.

  • If you are interested in participating in the Facial Recognition study, and are eligible to do an MRI, please contact the Graduate Researcher, Stefani Morgan at smorgan@psy.fsu.edu. Or the call the lab at 850-645-0655.

Additionally, please feel free to fill out this survey to leave your contact information, and we will reach out to you in a timely manner. Link to survey

Motion-Tracking and Eye-Tracking

Purpose of study: We are interested in investigating the neural mechanism associated with object categorizations utilizing different programs, in relation to memory.

  • We will need you to come to the lab a total of 3 times for assessment, task training, and MR scanning sessions.

On your first 2 visit, we will ask you to take part in a cognitive assessment categorizing objects. And on the last visit you will come to our MR facility for an fMRI scan in which you will be performing similar tasks while having the brain scan. Each visit will be completed 7 days from each other.

  • Motion-Tracking Eligibilities

    Eye-Tracking Eligibilities

    Participant must:

    Be 60+ years old

    Have no cataracts

    Have normal or corrected visions

    Have no permanent eyeliner
